Sarcanthus
For Tenor Saxophone
(2012) 6 minutes
Commissioned by Matt London for his debut CD, Speak Now. Premiered at the World Saxophone Congress at St. Andrews University, Scotland on July 10th, 2012.
Programme note
This piece is inspired by Amy Johnson’s pioneering and record breaking flight to Australia in 1930. I have recently completed an opera about Amy, and this work uses and develops some of the themes from it. David Hockney’s A Bigger PIcture exhibition, which includes paintings of Amy’s home county, also provided inspiration. The title refers to a perfume that was named after Amy: one of many tributes to her success.
